Grateful Bench Challenge (GBC)

The UCLA Institute for Carbon Management (ICM) at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, in partnership with the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) and Anthony Pritzker Family Foundation, invites interdisciplinary teams from across UCLA to participate in the Grateful Bench Challenge (GBC). Grateful Bench is a public-private partnership to expand trail accessibility through improvements to visitor experience, including the installation of trailside amenities such as benches along Los Angeles area mountain and river trails. This competition aims to develop innovative, scalable solutions that support Grateful Bench’s mission — specifically through improved systems for installing benches in remote areas.

The Challenge

MRCA currently faces major logistical difficulties installing benches on steep, rugged trails. A small crew must haul 800+ pounds of materials — including cement, aggregate, and water — typically over 500 yards of uneven terrain. This process often takes up to one week, involves 22 trips, and costs more than $6,000 per bench. The GBC challenges teams to deliver a holistic systems design that integrates: (1) A scalable logistics and planning framework. (2) Optimized bench and foundation components to reduce load and complexity. (3) A repeatable installation process that significantly lowers labor, cost, time, and risk. Teams will receive data covering 71 eligible parks and are asked to propose an approach for installing 100+ benches across Southern California.
